ESL Academic Speaking

All students, especially English learners need to have daily opportunities to speak in class. English learners are learning “basic English” outside of the classroom by watching television and learning from peers. The classroom environment is the only place where they will learn and practice academic English. For this reason, we need to be aware of how often we are expecting our students to speak in class and of how we are facilitating the process. For English learners to experience success in academic speaking, the teacher needs to establish a classroom where communication is moving in multiple directions. Students need to speak to each other, as well as to the teacher. The teacher needs to model how to speak using academic language and provide language support in the form of sentence starters, templates, and structured discussions. In this type of environment, students are expected to speak and contribute on a daily basis.
