Editing Marks

Our list of editing marks can become a common language and approach to editing written work in your classroom. Students can use these marks to edit during Peer Review and to edit their own work. Teaching a simple list of editing marks can help students identify their grammatical errors while helping them improve their writing.

There are two handouts. One is the teacher guide and the other is the student activity. The guide provides teaching strategies to help classroom teachers implement the editing marks effectively.

Where is this in the Writing Process: Step 3

Explicitly Teach: Explain. Connect. Model. Practice.

Cycle of Independence: I do. We do. They do. You do.

Origin: Maxine Sagapolutele--an ESL/ELD high school teacher--helped develop this tool for LiteracyTA after being inspired by the work Grossmont Community College was doing with EL students' writing.

Literacy Standards In Action

We've mapped our literacy lessons and reading, speaking, and writing skills to state standards, Common Core, and NGSS. The standards are "the what" to teach. Our lessons are "the how" to meet the expectations defined by the standards. Click on the links below to view our quick reference table that maps standards to literacy lessons.
