5 Steps to Confident Reading

LiteracyTA's step-by-step reading process improves students' comprehension and develops their ability to read for deeper meaning. Built on inquiry-based thinking, students are guided to ask the types of questions good readers ask while reading.

5 Steps to Confident Reading is broken into five easy steps:

  1. understand your reading/performance task;
  2. review your text;
  3. read for comprehension;
  4. read for deeper meaning; and
  5. organize and cite important information.

We support each step in the process with skill guides, student activities, and language supports that engage students in rigorous course work and higher level thinking. Students should practice 5 Steps to Confident Reading in all subject areas in order to develop the habits of mind they need to be skilled readers. A focused, school-wide approach to reading will boost students' confidence and improve their academic performance.

Literacy Standards In Action

We've mapped our literacy lessons and reading, speaking, and writing skills to state standards, Common Core, and NGSS. The standards are "the what" to teach. Our lessons are "the how" to meet the expectations defined by the standards. Click on the links below to view our quick reference table that maps standards to literacy lessons.
