An eye for an eye?

This lesson focuses on revenge and if it is ever justifiable. You will read a modified version of a classic text by Sir Francis Bacon and discuss his claims in a Socratic Seminar.

Writing Prompt

A famous quote from the bible reads "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth," arguing that revenge is necessary to achieve justice. Gandhi, the famous non-violent activist, stated "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." Sir Francis Bacon puts forth his own opinions on revenge in this famous text.

Identify specific claims in "On Revenge." Evaluate if the author's reasoning is sound and if the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims made in the text. To what extent do you agree or disagree with Bacon's claims?
