As we transition into summer, we can't help thinking about the next school year. Some might have just learned that they are teaching another grade. Others perhaps will be teaching another subject. And still others might be teaching at another school. Then there is a group who will experience no change from spring to fall.

For most of the year, I have explicitly taught critical concepts to my students before we enter a text. I have my students create a critical concepts table in their spiral notebooks and work with them to complete each row in the table.

We do so much on our mobile devices these days that they have become our secondary computers. We use our phones and tablets for fun, to reference information, and do work related tasks like check email and create documents. Some educators are using their mobile devices to teach lessons in the classroom.

This is a personal post for me. Netaliya Zora, a former student of mine, came to me last week and asked if she could speak to my students about her first year at college. I happily accepted her offer and asked her to speak to my sophomores who are having trouble understanding my expectations for reading and writing. I also want them to hear from someone else what college is like.
