My colleague and fellow LiteracyTA Senior Coach Rick Millican and I were talking the other day about summary writing and how we can offer more activities that teachers can use to get their students summarizing key ideas more proficiently. We knew of the "bumper sticker" strategy where teachers ask students to write a short 5-8 word summary of the main ideas, so we started there.
