Text Complexity Meter

We have made it easy for teachers to measure text complexity through four characteristics: vocabulary, text structure, your students’ knowledge of a subject, and the overall length of a text. Our Text Complexity Meter will use this information to evaluate the complexity of the texts you plan to teach.

Educators can also use the Text Complexity Meter to learn more about why certain texts are more challenging than others. Coach Natalie will provide useful information to help teachers evaluate their texts and learn more about characteristics of challenging texts.

General Text Complexity

We have made it easy for you to measure text complexity through four characteristics: vocabulary, text structure, your students’ knowledge of a subject, and the overall length of a text. LiteracyTA’s Text Complexity Meter will use this information to evaluate the complexity of your text.

Low

Number of Pages

To accurately evaluate text complexity, we need to consider the overall length of a text. How long is the text you are using for this lesson? Slide the bar to match the number of pages or type the number in the box.

Vocabulary Difficulty

To accurately categorize this text as having low, medium, or high vocabulary, we must consider the grade level for which the reading is intended and then use the scale below to help guide our decisions.

  • Low: 0-5 challenging or unfamiliar words
  • Medium: 6-12 challenging or unfamiliar words
  • High: 13+ challenging or unfamiliar words

Prior Knowledge

Let’s measure your students’ prior knowledge.

  • Familiar: 0-2 references to unfamiliar ideas or subject matter.
  • Somewhat Familiar: 3-4 references to unfamiliar ideas or subject matter.
  • Unfamiliar: 5+ references to unfamiliar ideas or subject matter.

Text Structure

To evaluate text structure, consider the overall length of the sentences and the arrangement of the paragraphs in a text.

  • Simple: The text offers sentences and paragraphs that are at or below grade level.
  • Somewhat Challenging: The text offers a mix of complex and simple sentences and paragraphs that are at or above grade level.
  • Challenging: The text offers complex sentence structure and sophisticated paragraphs that are above grade level.
